Ketamine is a drug that has been in use since the 1970s. It has been approved by the FDA for use in anesthesia and as a pain reliever during surgery. Its use in the mental health care setting is in much lower dosages vs. its use in anesthesia. Using ketamine for depression, our ketamine clinic offers treatment options for patients across Colorado and Alaska. Our Colorado Springs ketamine clinic is located of Powers Blvd with easy access to Monument, Fountain, and Peyton, Colorado. Ketamine treatments offer rapid improvement for symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and Bipolar Disorder.
Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist working through the glutamate neurotransmitter system, and at low doses, it is believed to exert its antidepressant effects through the enhancement of neuroplasticity, or the ability of brain cells to form new connections with one another.
The glutamate pathway is very different from that used by other psychiatric drugs (e.g., SSRIs, SNRIS, lamotrigine, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines), which is part of what makes ketamine’s antidepressant effects so novel and unlike any other known form of treatment. However, the medical community's understanding of ketamine’s mode of action is incomplete, and we may find other mechanisms that contribute to its antidepressant effects in the future. Ketamine treatment offers rapid and effective symptoms improvement in as little as 24 hours.
A thorough evaluation will be done with one of our licensed providers to help determine whether ketamine is an appropriate treatment option for you. We offer in-clinic and telehealth ketamine treatment options for patients across Colorado and Alaska. Our Colorado Springs ketamine clinic offers ketamine infusions in a serene and relaxing atmosphere with close monitoring by our medical providers.
Research has shown that Ketamine may be helpful in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Chronic Migraines, and Chronic Pain. While the goal is improvement of depression, PTSD, migraines, or chronic pain, results cannot be guaranteed. As part of these psychiatric treatment services, you may be prescribed a medicine named ketamine, a Schedule III medication that has been used for various medical reasons since it was initially FDA-approved in 1970. This medication is not clinically appropriate for all people, but it has been shown to have positive effects for the treatment of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), alcohol use disorder, substance use disorder, chronic pain, and other indications.
These uses are referred to as “off-label,” since they are not the purposes for which the medication was approved by the FDA. Off-label prescribing, when clinically appropriate, is both legal and common. As with any medication, ketamine is not without risks, and these must be kept in mind when determining whether this treatment is right for you.
